Hello,
My name is Constantin. I was born in Romania in the port city of Constanta. I had my first experience with photography in school at age twelve. There was no Facebook or Instagram then (and smartphones were 20 years away) so most of my memories of those times are shaped in black and white on film with primitive Russian cameras - the most popular in the area of the time.
After graduating from high school in 1992, I got my first job as a photojournalist at a local newspaper. Within five years, I moved to Bucharest where I developed my skills with our main daily newspapers. Over nearly 10 years, I covered all the current events: election campaigns , news, portraits, political, riots, and social features--all on black & white film, manually processed and printed by myself.
For the past 10 years, I have evolved as an independent photographer, traveling and discovering the commercial side of photography, including fashion, social, medical, corporate, and industrial. My passion in photojournalism is the use of light; this mere style reflects everything as life exists on light: 'Let there be light' were the first words after heaven and earth were created. Then why not leave light as it is, and reproduce it as such?
Generally, I don't stage anything. Moments are captured or stolen, most often unnoticed. An equally natural post-processing leaves out dramatic adjustments of reality as close as possible to natural.
I am passionate about my family. When not taking pictures you can most often find me flying a plane or free diving in Cyprus. However, these days I enjoy the simple pleasure of creating Romanian style meals for my wife Maria, and children Daria and Matei in the USA, as we begin the next chapter of our lives.
My name Ciocan means 'Hammer' in Romanian. Watch me smash the world in 2D.
